Re:       Lab meeting for the Winter 2007

Date:    January 8, 2007

Hello-

Here is the Fall Lab meeting schedule. For this academic year, lab meetings are held every Monday, 3pm to 5pm in the Pharmacology Library on the second floor of MSRB 3 (right next to Rick Neubig’s lab).

We have three different types of presentations at our lab meeting:

(1) Formal data presentation

(2) Informal data sessions

(3) Journal club

(1)  Formal Data Presentation:

Each presenter should plan on a 40 min presentation with 15 min for discussion.  Powerpoint presentations are the norm. Your talk should address the following:

INTRODUCTION:

(1)  what is the goal?

(2)  What is the background evidence that supports the research project (either data from our lab or from the literature).

PROGRESS REPORT:

(1)  What has been accomplished to date ? How do your results fit in with the big picture?

(2)  What are some of the problems encountered.

(2) Informal data sessions

Everyone who has data to show will discuss their work in progress in an informal setting (bring notebooks).

We typically use transparencies to show the data – we look at raw data as well as graphed data.

(3) Journal club:

Journal papers are discussed in a powerpoint format:

1) by Thursday of the week prior to your JC, email me 5 of your JC selections and I will select one for presentation. Papers that are appropriate for discussion- topics relevant to your project which you think the group will benefit from.  Please pick papers published within the past 1-2 years.

2) email the pdf of the paper to everyone in the group by the preceding Friday at the latest.

3) we pick significant and relevant papers in the field to discuss. Therefore we typically pick papers from the following journals:

Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Medicine, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Cell Biology

Science

Cell, Molecular Cell, Cancer Cell, Neuron, Immunity, Developmental Cell

Journal of Cell Biology

Journal of Neuroscience, Development

Genes and Development

PNAS

Journal of Experimental Medicine

Other journals:

Blood

Cell Death Differentiation, Oncogene, Cancer Research

Journal of Biological Chemistry

Journal club format:

(1) introduction to the topic- background, evidence leading to the proposed studies

(2) discussion of key experiments - make sure you know how the experiment was performed and how you would interpret the results

(3) significance of the findings and how you would do differently.

** It is your responsibility to reserve a laptop and portable projector if you will have a need for them.

You can reserve them through Anna, the Pharmacology Dept secretary. There is both a PC (old) and Mac Laptop (new).

Reserve early as they tend to be in great demand during the academic year.
